Welcome to the Lake Albert MotelMeningie is considered the northern gateway to the unique Coorong National Park. It is part of the Murray lakes region with many beautiful wildlife and nature walks. Originally occupied by five tribes of the Njarrindjeri people, the first European to explore the area was Captain Charles Sturt in 1830. Many settlers followed, bringing sheep and cattle and by the 1840’s the ferry at Wellington was operating. Meningie was established as a staging post on the coaching route carrying the overlanders on their way to Melbourne and the goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo. The main Melbourne route eventually shifted north but the area remained an important agricultural and fishing area. The name “Meningie” is generally accepted to come from the Aboriginal word meaning “mud”. For more accommodation options, please see the Waterfront Motel - www.waterfrontmotel.on.net
